Of all the chimney repair and maintenance services we offer, one of the most important is chimney relining.

What Is a Chimney Liner & Why Do I Need One?

The chimney liner runs the length of the flue and is designed to keep the smoke, heat, and other byproducts created during combustion from leaking back out into the chimney, surrounding walls, and air supply of the home.

By containing these noxious gases and harsh fumes, the liner serves three main purposes:

  • It protects the vulnerable inner walls of the chimney from  damage.
  • It prevents any nearby combustibles from being exposed to high heat and sparks.
  • It prohibits any smoke – and the dangerous chemicals like carbon monoxide that it contains – from entering back into your home and infiltrating your air.

The surface of the liner should be smooth and airtight to ensure that smoke and other byproducts move up the flue and out of the chimney swiftly and directly.

How Will I Know If My Chimney Needs Relining?

Every chimney flue should have a liner, but unfortunately, chimneys haven’t always been built with liners. If you have an older (pre-1940s) chimney system, there’s a possibility it is lacking a liner altogether. If you aren’t sure, one of our Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney professionals will be able to thoroughly inspect your chimney system and let you know if your chimney is unlined.

If you know your chimney has a liner but you aren’t sure whether or not it’s still in good condition, we can help. We’ll inspect the interior of your flue, checking for cracks, holes, or signs of deterioration within your existing liner. Based on our findings, we may recommend one of two relining options:

Flexible chimney flue liner duct pipe.
  • HeatShield® – HeatShield® is a  “Cerfractory” (a unique combination of ceramic and refractory materials) sealant product that can be used to repair specific areas of your clay tile liner or resurface the liner in its entirety.
  • Stainless Steel – Stainless steel liners can be retrofitted into your flue to provide a durable, airtight, smooth new liner surface. These liners are great for chimneys with damaged liners, missing liners, and for those systems needing a flue resize.
